Types of Personal Breathalyzers

Handheld breathalyzers come in different sizes. Some are as small as cell phones while others are a bit larger. They are battery operated and normally include an LED display that shows the numeric reading. Some displays are also backlit for easy reading in dark areas. Some require mouthpieces while others do not. Smaller versions may include wrist straps for portability. Some include additional features such as a clock, countdown timer, temperature display, etc.

Breathalyzer keychains are small, lightweight, discreet, and easy to carry around. They are battery-operated and typically close to the size of a standard car remote. They are said to be as reliable as standard breathalyzers although some breathalyzer keychains may be of higher quality and provide more accurate readings. They don’t require mouthpieces. Some have LED displays to show the numeric reading while others only use different colored LED lights to indicate the level of intoxication. Some also include additional features such as a flashlight.

iBreath was designed a breathalyzer accessory to be used with iPods or iPhones. It plugs directly into the dock connector and doubles as an FM transmitter. There are no batteries needed since it runs off the iPod or iPhone’s power. The mouthpiece folds into the side of the device so that it doesn’t stick out. An LED display shows you the numeric reading. The device includes a timer that you can set from 1 minute up to 8 hours so that you can remind yourself when to take the next test.

Handheld PDA breathlyzers include many other features including a calculator, world time clock, calendar, etc. Just like a cell phone, they use charging cables to recharge the battery. They require mouthpieces, which may require replacing over time.
