Breathalyzers are handheld devices used to estimate the blood alcohol content (BAC) in a person’s body. By breathing into the device, the breathalyzer can measure the amount of alcohol exhaled from the lungs to provide a good estimate of the concentration of alcohol in the bloodstream. It is recommended that the test be done 20 minutes after the last alcoholic drink consumed to obtain the most accurate reading possible. Police use this device to determine if someone is driving under the influence of alcohol and if he/she is over the legal limit.
